The Herod Complex

Migdalia Rosado Hernández, Tamarindo 34 Derechos Humanos

HAVANA, January 31 - The Herod Complex is the title of an article by the journalist Rosa Miriam Elizarde published in the weekly "Juventud Rebelde" this past January 7.

She starts by stating: "There are wounds that remain in the memory of the nation and are like deep cuts, like knife thrusts." This she says about the Elián case, the rafter boy who survived a shipwreck in which his mother died and who now finds himself under the protective mantle of the United States flag.

I have to allow there is a certain truth in the statement of the reporter for "Juventud Rebelde." Indeed, there are wounds that are like knife thrusts, like deep cuts, and that remain in the memory of the nation, and also of humanity, as was the case of the sinking of the 13 de Marzo tugboat, in which 20 Cuban children lost their lives. Their ages were between six months and 15 years.

Those small victims did not find a hand that sheltered them with the flag of salvation, but there was a hand that annihilated them and filled their relatives with eternal sadness, and in their memories and in the History of our era, engraved forever the horrible crime committed by unscrupulous people, by the fanatics of a senseless dogma.

Madam journalist, you accuse the counter revolutionary mafia who sheltered the small Cuban rafter, but we accuse the criminals who ordered and executed that vile act against life.

Madam, it only remains for me to ask: Who is the real Herod, he who saves or he who kills children?
