GUANTÁNAMO, February 14 (Rafael Fonseca Ochoa, APSIC) - Authorities of the women's prison in Guantánamo, eastern Cuba, have been pressuring a 30 year-old inmate to have an abortion.
Yesenia Rodríguez Aguilar is serving a three year sentence for illegally attempting to leave the country and has, thus far, refused to comply with the government's demands.
On January 29, she was taken to the "Agustino Neto" hospital to have an ultrasound and a urinalysis performed. On the way back to the prison, Rodríguez felt dizziness and loss of equilibrium and asked officer Dignora Navarro for help. Instead, Navarro shoved her.
Rodríguez suffers from cystitis and a kidney infection, but prison authorities say they will withhold at least some medical care because she refuses to abort voluntarily.
