The United States has accused Cuba of systematically trampling on the rights of its citizens. In its annual report on human rights around the world, the State Department said President Fidel Castro's government also denied dissidents fair trials and many were languishing in jails.
The report comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Havana over Cuba's refusal to recall a diplomat accused of spying in the United States. The US has given the envoy, Jose Imperatori, until Saturday to leave. Regarding Colombia, the report said there had been some improvements.
But it accused left-wing guerrillas and paramilitary groups of widespread human rights violations, and it highlighted the links between the armed forces and paramilitaries in certain parts of the country.
