Warning To Agricultural Interests

HAVANA, February 27 (Vicente Escobal, Lux InfoPress) - An agricultural pest that has become widespread throughout the Caribbean could invade Cuba unless vigilance is redoubled, the Cuban Research Institute warned this week.

The pink hibiscus mealybug, which has already caused millions of dollars in damages in neighboring countries, can attack more than 300 species of plants, including fruits, legumes, and ornamentals. The consequences of the introduction of the insect to Cuba would be catastrophic, according to experts who say that the country is not technologically prepared to face this kind of threat.
