CIEGO DE AVILA, July 4 (Juan Carlos González Leyva, FAPDH) State farm co-ops and agricultural enterprises have made changes in the methods of production and peasants are not happy; they say the new practice "is a new way to put [them] against the wall."
The most significant change implemented by the government consists in dividing land holdings into smaller parcels to which several workers are connected; the workers now have to for their work and for the yields in "their" parcels.
Most peasants also say they new procedures will not accomplish any increases in productivity but will definitely harm them.
Since inception, peasants have had a hard time securing some foodstuffs for themselves. They say other peasants are leery of exchanging the produce from their fields without the proper authorizations.
Also, peasants in the "October Revolution" co-op say the measures will affect their salaries. Where they previously could earn up to 20,000 pesos at the end of the year and 20-30 pesos daily, now they expect to make 6,000 pesos at years end and are earning 8 pesos a day.
