CAMAGÜEY, March 20 (Pablo Pacheco Avila, IC) - A man accused of "theft
and illegal slaughter of cattle" hung himself in his jail cell with a
blanket, said Pura Castillo Palmero of the Cuban Foundation of Human Rights.
Alfredo González Cifuentes was being held in the municipal police
station of Venezuela, Ciego de Ávila province. The crime of which he was
accused can mean up to 20 years in jail, or even a death sentence, depending on
circumstances.
Some are still willing to defy the draconian measures in order to procure
meat on the hoof, usually both to eat and to trade.
