CAMAGUEY, November 13 (Normando Hernandez, IC / cubanet.sergipeconectado.com) - The
detection of cases of brucellosis in humans prompted sanitary authorities to
declare Vertiente town, in Camaguey province, on alert.
The situation in that region worsened with the detection of nine centers of
Aedes aegyptis mosquitoes in the urban area.
Through informal conversations with several doctors, it was known that the
greatest risk zone is the zone around El Chorro, population of 500, where six
cases of brucellosis have been reported so far.
Some local public health specialists expressed concern, given the fact that
this disease can become chronic and in cases be fatal.
So far the magnitude of the problem is unknown, because once the disease
reaches humans it means the degree of the infection in cattle could be high.
El Chorro is located in a cattle region, and most of the milk and dairy
products the Vertiente population consumes comes from the black market of the
area.
Brucellosis is transmitted through contaminated and untreated milk and milk
products and by direct with infected animals and the animal carcasses.
On the other hand, nine centers of Aedes aegyptis mosquitoes, transmitters
of the Dengue fever, were detected. Some sanitary workers informed that the
first centers were located in the El Van neighborhood, but expressed they had
the situation under control.
So far, there hasn't been reports of Dengue fever.
