Self-employed vendors evicted from school vicinity

HAVANA, October 18 (José Antonio Fornaris, Cuba-Verdad /CubaNet) - Thirty self-employed vendors who sold food around the "Salvador Allende" teachers' college were evicted last week.

One of the vendors said that Public Health inspectors alleged that some students at the school came down with hepatitis. "They also said something about a fight between students and workers, in which one school custodian was wounded, but none of us sell alcoholic beverages and the fight happened because both parties were drunk."

The vendors, who pay license fees to authorities, say the hepatitis has nothing to do with them and is due to the lack of hygiene at the government-operated cafeteria in the area frequented by the students.

The vendors say they appealed to the National Tax istration Office, which licenses them, and were told Public Health had a right to remove them, but that it had to provide an alternative venue for them to ply their wares. "We were evicted a week ago and they haven't found us a place yet," said one vendor.

The thirty vendors, who had operated around the school for years, typically make and sell pizza, sweets, shakes and soft drinks.
