German tourists surprised by police procedure

HAVANA, July 1 (Victor Manuel Domínguez, Lux Info Press / cubanet.sergipeconectado.com) - A couple of German tourists were surprised by the attitude of two Cuban policemen, who threatened and fined a Cuban youth with whom they were talking in the vicinity of the Capitol last Tuesday.

An officer with badge 02202 grabbed the youth by the arm and told him that he didn’t care if the tourists were present, but, he said, "you are being cute and I am the law."

The Germans, in deficient Spanish, insisted that they were only talking with the youth, at which point the other officer, badge 02702, asked the youth to produce identification and fined him 20 pesos. They then expelled him from the vicinity.

The area around the Capitol is frequented by tourists. Cuban beggars, prostitutes, and others who try to sell cigars or other wares are not welcome by the authorities.
