The New York Academy of Science has awarded
the Heinz R. Pagels Science award for 2002 to dissident Cuban economist Martha
Beatriz Roque Cabello.
The Academy's release states the prize is awarded "To Martha Beatriz
Roque Cabello for her untiring efforts in promoting democracy." Roque is
the director of the Institute of Independent
Economists.
Roque herself said about the award: "First we should underline that
this is a scientific award, granted by one of the most prestigious institutions
in the world to the work of the Institute of Independent Economists, whose depth
and seriousness are demonstrated, for example, in our web site."
Since its inception, the Heinz R. Pagels prize has been awarded to
personalities such as Andrei Zacharov, and last year it was given to 16
prominent scientists. The prize has a monetary value of 50,000 dollars.
Roque has a long history in the defense of human rights and liberty in Cuba.
She was a co-author of the document 'The Fatherland Belongs to All,' for which
she was sentenced to prison.
