Thirty families threatened by pollution

PINAR DEL RIO, March 21 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI / cubanet.sergipeconectado.com) - At least 30 families who live in the township of Puerta de Golpe are threatened by pollution emanating from a smelter that operates in the area.

A reliable source said the antiquated technology of the furnace used to work aluminum, bronze, and other metals, lets the gases and ash escape and spread all over the immediate area.

"Many residents of Puerta de Golpe suffer from respiratory diseases. Most of them live near the smelter," said the source.

The smelter is important for agricultural interests in the area, since it produces needed parts and implements.
