FROM CUBA Farmers markets shut down in eastern Cuba r6vc

HAVANA, Cuba, November 7 (cubanet.sergipeconectado.com) - Farmers markets in three neighborhoods in the eastern city of Holgun were shut down after police raids, labor activists said, making area residents travel longer distances to obtain their produce at what some complained were higher prices.

Authorities have not given an explanation for shutting down the markets, said Csar Romn, an activist with the Independent Labor Confederation, adding that there is an ongoing wave of repressive raids directed against the self-employed of every description.

Pedicab and horse-drawn cart drivers have been bearing the brunt of the raids, said Romn. Typically, they are fined 500 to 1,500 pesos, and sometimes they end up having their vehicles confiscated.

Romn pointed out that the most irksome scene to the townspeople is watching police dump a load of milk onto the street whenever they inspect what they consider an illegal milk vendor.

Milk has been in short supply on the island for years.
