FROM CUBA Cuban journalist learns of award from prison 2v2g70

HAVANA, October (cubanet.sergipeconectado.com) - Imprisoned independent journalist Manuel Vzquez Portal recently learned the New York-based Committee for the Protection of Journalists had awarded him one of its International Press Freedom Awards for 2003.

"It's good to know that," said Vzquez when his wife, Yolanda Huerga, told him by telephone.

Vzquez is serving an 18-year sentence at the Aguadores prison in eastern Cuba. He is one of 30 journalists presently in prison in Cuba. He has continued to write from his cell, somehow managing to smuggle his writings out of the prison.
