FROM CUBA New requirements for self-employed carpenters in Cuba 3u2e3l

HAVANA, August 6 (Vctor Manuel Domnguez, Lux Info Press / cubanet.sergipeconectado.com) - Inspectors from the National Tax Office have been making the rounds of self-employed carpenters with news of a new requirement to be met: working hours must now be approved by the carpenters' neighbors and interested organizations and be endorsed by the municipal social security and labor ministry offices.

The regulation was issued by the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Alfredo Morales.

On this round, inspectors are checking for self-employment licenses and work permits, receipts from the Tax Authority that all taxes have been paid, documentation accrediting the legal procedence of all materials used in the shop, and now, a petition signed by all neighbors that stipulates the hours during which the power saws may be used and during which hammering and other activities proper to the craft may be done.

Carpenters pay 200 pesos a month in taxes, and they must scrounge for their supplies; a pound of nails currently sells for 40 pesos, and a can of varnish for 15 dollars. The wood they usually salvage from demolished structures.
