Cuban campers complain of slow evacuation

- Close to 1,000 vacationers at the Peas
Altas camping ground, near Havana, complain
authorities kept them waiting for 12 hours
without food and in the open before evacuating
them ahead of hurricane Charley.
One of the campers, Pablo Arbeya, said
they were ordered to leave the camp's housing
at about 4 p.m. August 11 and to muster
at an open courtyard to wait for buses that
would evacuate them. The buses did not come
until 4 a.m. the next day, Arbeya said,
and in that time they were only given luke-warm
water and were able to buy an also luke-warm
soft drink for two pesos a glass.
Arbeya said some of the campers complained
to the camp director, who said it wasn't
his fault, since he was only relaying orders
from above.
To top it all, Arbeya said, the campers
were only at the camp for two days and were
not given refunds even though they had paid
for seven-day stays.
