Steep fines levied in Cuba on private
produce vendors 293a1c
HAVANA, January 2 (cubanet.sergipeconectado.com) -
Inspectors of the National Taxation Office
levied steep fines, which some called prohibitive,
on more than 30 self-employed produce vendors
at the Camagey agricultural markets.
During the year-end holidays the government-run
markets remained closed and the only places
consumers could obtain produce were through
these private vendors at agricultural markets.
"After the fines were levied,"
said one consumer, "the price of pork
went to 30 pesos (just over one dollar)
a pound."
