FROM CUBA Teacher jailed for lack of ID card 361d68

HAVANA, Cuba - July 21 (Jos Antonio Fornaris, Cuba Verdad / cubanet.sergipeconectado.com) - A high school Physics teacher was kept in jail for 36 hours when he failed to produce an ID card during a search on his way to work.

ngel Blanco, 28, was on his way to school, the Jos Manuel Betance high school, in Alquzar, on the outskirts of Havana, when police searched him and asked for his ID card. Blanco didn't have his card with him and police took him to the station located at Dragones and Zulueta Streets, in Old Havana.

Once there, Blanco said he had been kept in a cell with eight other persons, some of whom he said were considered dangerous and who tried to find an opportunity to assault him.

Blanco was not released until his mother appeared at the station with his ID card.

Blanco's mother said she had called the police when her son failed to show up as expected, but was told he was not detained. She said she didn't know where he was until someone called her and told her he was at the police station.

When she complained about the treatment, Blanco's mother said a young officer called her aside and told her "it would be best to keep quiet because things could get complicated."
