FROM CUBA Chemical plants are heavy polluters 5746m

SANTA CLARA, Cuba - October 7 (Alain Ramn Gmez Ramos, Cubanacn Press / cubanet.sergipeconectado.com) - Two chemical plants in Sagua la Grande release a range of pollutants, including mercury, to the atmosphere and the Sagua river, which eventually carries them to the sea.

According to local activist Abelardo Sosa, the factories date back to the 1940s and are using dated technology.

The plants' workers are frequently sent to Havana to be treated for various ailments at a special medical facility there. Plant workers report cardiovascular, renal, and pulmonary complaints.
