Haitian medical student's belongings confiscated
at airport 1m6u5y
SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba - January 31 (Lisette
Bravo / APLO) - A Haitian who's studying
medicine in Santiago de Cuba said customs
authorities at the airport in Havana confiscated
some of his belongings when he entered the
country.
Telmata David was returning to Cuba January
23 from his country and he brought with
him a number of gifts for his Cuban girlfriend,
her relatives, and other friends, he said.
When he arrived at Havana airport, he
said, the customs agent who searched his
belongings confiscated the gifts, mostly
clothing, claiming they were for resale
in Cuba.
David returned to the airport the next
day to reclaim his property, arguing that
the whole of his luggage did not exceed
the 64 kilograms allowed by law. At the
airport, he said, customs officials told
him he would have to pay duty on the items,
and he said he didn't have enough money
to do that.
